#424, "Disc...slotted or crossdrilled?"

My disc are on a downward spiral. I was thinking of replacing them with either slotted or crossdrilled ones when I put my 18's on next week. Which is better to go with?

Oh one other question. What have you guys done with your rear drums? I don't really wanta do a conversion. I just wanta clean them up a little. They are cast iorn right? They are rusted and are gonna look pretty fucking ugly with those 18's. Any suggestions?

Well, I got slotted rotors, they will help bite into the pads a bit better for better stopping, but also they will wear down the pads faster, but who cares if you want to stop better you can't have 50K mile brake pads. (the mushier the pads the better they work, look at any german car the front rims are covered with an inch of crap because they put mushy pads which put out tons of brake dust and don't last as long, but they stop the car alot better)

Also I have HEARD of (but not seen) problems with cross drilled rotors cracking, but my friend has cross drilled with no problems so I guess it's only if you really push them.

And I'd do nothing about the rear drums, the fronts are what count, don't worry about the rear brakes other than making sure they work properly. Also rear drum shoes last alot longer, my front pads had 50% wear, the rear shoes had about 10% wear and amazingly all the springs looked brand new, no rust at all.

Yeah I figured those slotted would wear the pads faster. I have also heard several stories of hariline cracks on the crossdrilled. I'm not planning to do anything performance wise to the rear drums. I really like them in that aspect. Can I sand them down a bit and get that rust of them?

I think the problems with cross drilled rotors depend on how they are made. Most companies cast the rotor and then just drill through it. Somebody(I don't remember who) cast the holes into when it s being formed and hardened. Which is much stronger. Eventually when I have a lot more money than I do now, I'm going to get the Baer big brake kit and have crossdrilled and slotted rotors... but don't hold your breath for me on this one. But a safe bet is to get the slotted rotors, and some good pads.

For the rear drums. Paint them silver. I had problems with my wheels oxidizing to the rotors and drums. So I put antisieze on the drum and got a liitle bit smeared, aso I would up basically covering the drum with antisieze(silver). I've had compliments that the silver makes the drums look better. So take a wire brush and sand down outside of the drum and paint them with a high temp paint and you'll look a lot better under the wheels and stop the rust. This is what I was going to do until I got the conversion parts.

Went ahead and ordered some slotted rotors today. But I think I'm gonna try the crossdrilled ones this summer to see how they hold up. And thanks for the advice on the drums. I think i'll give that high tempered paint a shot. Thanks for the help guys.

Where did you guys get them from? What price? When I do the conversion I want to replace all the way around with cross-drilled and some good pads. What pads are you guys running too? I've been leaning towards EBC's.
Thanks

I am running the EBC Greenstuff. I'm not sure where the rotors are from but they are the powerstop.(they were a present thats why I don't know where they are from) I think the rotors are about 49-55 ea. and the pads were about 50. Hope this helps.

Yeah modacar is selling Power Stop Crossdrilled for $200 for the front. Think I'll give these a shot this summer.

Oh yeah I ordered Power Slot slotted rotors from modacar. These are the same as Power Stop aren't they?

It was like $57 - $65 (somewhere in that range) for the front set. I got them at a local store called KC Trends (in KC, go figure) and I don't know if they will ship them to you but if you still want the number I can get it for you. Let me know.

All that I can add at this point is that, don't paint your drums silver on 18"s.... I have 17" SSR Integrals and the silver drums on my car (in my opinion) look stupid. They stand out too much. I think that black would have been a better choice. Also High temp paint makes no difference (over regular paint), but it might last longer. If you are looking for a custom color mix, then paint a coupla coats high temp paint and then paint over it the color you want.

Just a bare metal look silver/grey.

Which I would think would be a good color to paint. Not gloss but a flat grey or silver. Probably look better in a silver. Or if you go Black I would go gloss black.

Is there some type of a high tempered clear coating that can be placed on these to keep them from rusting? For example does Rustolium make just a clear coat spray?

Check your local parts store I don't remember the brand but they make a ceramic based paint that comes in 500 degree and 1200 degree high temp paint. Either one should withstand the heat created by your brakes and not flake off.

The only ones I've seen come with the Baer dual caliper kit I want and am no where near being able to afford right now.
