Does anyone know what the temperature range for the headers of our engines?
I need to get some paint for it, and I found some brake caliper paint-yellow. And it is good for 900 degrees...?
You think it will withstand the heat?
Thanks for the input
MIke

Brake caliper paint is for brake calipers - get some high heat engine paint - in the paint department of all major parts stores. That brake caliper paint will burn off instantly. Look at the turbo guys posts and you will see they are getting EGT numbers of about 1300 degress - so if I had to guess - right there, maybe a littler lower or higher because you are not turbo.

ha ha, not even close. The highest temp paint I've seen is 1200 degrees, give that a shot, so it may bubble off too, or you may be fine. If you could find a 1500 or 1600 you'd be set. let us know how it goes.

there is actually header paint you should use. it has some ceramic shit in it so it resists/disapates heat better. i dont think it comes in yellow but ive seen it in aluminum, blue, and black. you can get it at advanced auto or any chain store like that.

THURMALOX... Check it out at www.dampney.com

I have run it on my heat shield, exhaust and brake calipers for over a year...
Still looks great so its not marketing hype! Comes in spray can.

Thurmalox industrial heat resistant coatings offer:
~ heat resistance to 2000F (1079C)
~ ability to withstand severe thermal cycling without fracturing
~ color stability to 1000F (538C) with peaks to 1200F (648C)
~ ease of application (Comes in a spray can)
~ quick dry times - no complex heat cure cycle
~ single package or primer/topcoat systems
~ high build, self priming systems
~ proven VOC-compliant formulations
Some Thurmalox coating can be applied directly to hot steel operating at
temperatures up to 500F (260). Others protect
thermally insulated stainless steel from chloride induced external stress
corrosion cracking. Also available are temperature indicating systems that show
changes in the exterior surface temperatures of steel, as well as heat and
chemical resistant caulking compounds.

Now that would be sweet .. paint that changes color depending on how hot the surface temp is.. Love to have some of that on my turbine housing..

LAST EDITED ON 02-May-01 AT 09:18 PM (PST)

if i felt like dealing with a possible leaky exhaust gasket i would be on that....i would have to take my headers off to paint them.
