#138136, "stripped spark plug thread in head"

So a couple months ago my eclipse randomly popped out the spark plug on cylinder one stripped the threads in the process. Didn't really have the time to fix it with a new job and needed a daily driver so I ended up just buying a used 350Z and the Eclipse has been sitting ever since.

I've got some free time now and I'm wondering if anyone's encountered this problem on a 420a before and what's the best course for repair? Is it better to just replace the head or should I helicoil or something? The head's in otherwise good shape and was checked out when I had a cracked exhaust valve replaced at about 150k.

Now that the Eclipse isn't my DD I can treat it as more of a project car and down time isn't much of an issue. It's at almost 200k but runs reasonably well and I had recently redone most of the suspension prior to popping the spark plug (shocks, poly bushings, new R&P). I'm thinking about possibly finally going turbo as well.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

You can helicoil it with no issue, just make sure you do it correctly or you may have to take the head off to fix it...

hmmm yea I was reading about that as well. Would it better to take it to a shop if I go that route? I haven't used a heli coil before. I was reading about a couple different methods for collecting all the shavings and stuff.

Its best to take the head to a shop and have it installed their. if the repair is done incorrectly the spark plug will just blow out again. A shop should change no more than 100 to repair the thread if you remove the head.
