So, I picked up a pretty sweet deal about a week ago. $800 for a white 97 in decent condition, the only thing was, it threw a rod through the block. So I bought a spare short block that I thought was going to be a simple disassemble and stock rebuild without having to spend the money to over bore it. Turns out, cylinder #3 has some gouges in it that caught the fingernail pretty good. I took the hone to it to see if going to the max tolerance would clear it up, but it did not. I've got the cylinder honed out as far as I can to keep standard piston size... The gouges are still about .001 to .002 deep in the walls if that. I'm basically trying to get the car running with the least amount of money possible. SO, what do you guys think? Am I okay to put it back together? I've built many 420a's, but I have never put one back together with scored cylinder walls and normally never would. I'm wondering what to expect if I do go forward with it like this. Will it burn oil badly? Anyway, really just looking for some input here as I have no idea what to expect if I put it all together without going with oversize pistons. Thanks! Here's a pic of it after a little light honing was done. This is just cylinder #3, all other cylinders are just fine... I also honed it much more after these three pics...

I would bore it if you cant get rid of the scuffs. Its not worth putting the motor together and then finding out you have low compression and burning oil.

What kind of hone did you run through it? Can you catch your nail on it?
Next thing I want to know is what is the actual bore measurement on this....I want all 6 measurements for that cylinder.
Then I want the Piston measurement.
Depending on the amount of taper, bore siz and wall clearance this might be able to be save using a hone or at the minimum lessened to the point its no longer an issue.
I have seen far worse put back into service and be just fine. You wont know if thats a worthwhile gamble without doing the math.
What do you plan to do with the motor? Stock Daily or turbo it?

It was for a stock rebuild. Did all the measurements and it wasn't good... Already took it to the machine shop and got it bored out .020 over. All is good. The machine shop didn't get everything done when they said they would, so all I had to pay was $90 for a ton of machine work.... I keep getting extremely lucky on this rebuild lol. I was trying to keep it as cheap as I could and I keep getting these deals lol.
