#68518, "Long Tube Headers"

Fast Fabrications is now considering building long tube headers for the 2gnt, any input would be great as in what you guys are looking for in a header, price only, performance only, somewhere in the middle? lets do this on a sliding scale from 1 to 10, "1" being the best price and "10" being an absolute race header with price not being a factor, remember Im just trying to find out what you guys are looking for thanx Jason 336-627-0222

Well the problem with making a header for the 420a is that many people believe that there are minimal gains to be found. For example Greddy makes a header for the 420a, cost around $400 (i think), its a good quality header. SportCompactCar intalled this header on an eclipse and only got really low gains.

http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0202it_ppeclipse/index.html

Some members have installed headers on their cars and felt as though they wasted their money. Now I have a OBX header i got from SSautochrome for $135 shipped (if u email them they will cut you a deal even lower than ebay). As you know their warehouse is here in Morrisville NC. I live about 10 mins away in Raleigh, NC. I like my header, cant beat it for the price i got, and i got some nice gains with it. I do have cams, port work, etc so gains on my car would probably be more than a stock 420a.

I can come to the shop one weekend and let you look at my car for fitment or ideas, i even have a spare obx header w\o downpipe laying around somewhere (long story on why i have two).

What the 2gnt really needs is a custom intake manifold, with crane 16s my car needs more air flow.

Hey guys! I just got finished talking to Jason, and he is serious about this. Anyone see the June 2003 issue of HCI...Darrell Cox's 7 second bound SRT-4? Ever heard of Team MOPAR? Well, If you have...this is what Jason does. He's talking SERIOUS gains with the Non-turbo header...There are different options that he's going to be making available for it.(He'll have more info as more interest arises.)This header should make 10-15 HP on a stock RS! The header is still in Prototype stages, but very close to completion! Sounds awesome, and the price should be VERY competitive. Doesn't the Greddy only make something like 5 HP max over stock? He also has a sheet metal intake that is up-and-coming as well. I think this is the only other one out there besides the Venom....but this one actually provides noticeable gains! Just thought I'd share.

greddy makes like.... 1 or 2 hp at the wheels...

ide love a header that made some real power... but not for 600$ :-p

*edit*
well... if it actually made 15-20hp at the wheels... then ide consider 600$

if you want people to buy it and help out the 420a community, don't overprice your products. you'll make lots more profit if its reasonably priced than if u jack up the price and sell maybe 10. also, i live 30 minutes away from Walker Dynotune {where smithey of NABR goes } so I could get some nice pulls.

thanx for the response, keep them coming, what Im planning for is a header in the $400 range with an optional $100 merge collector , the header will be a 4 to 1 step tube header, it will come already coated, and will produce serious gains. Im trying to find out now , how many people will be interested if I produce it. Maybe we can do a group buy or something, let me know what you guys think, thanx Jason

if the HP difference between your header(500$) and an obx header(150$) is like 2 or 3 hp... then obviously its not gonna sell...

but if your can put down 8-10 WHEEL horsepower... they would sell like hotcakes. especially if you did the right promotion/advertising..... youde bank, seriously bank... youde probably sell hundreds of them... we have what? a few thousand NA users here? let alone all the people that would buy them if u get an article in a tuner mag or two.

ide defintly wanna see a dyno chart, imo it would be a must for most people to buy it. i really dont (and i dont think anyone does) care what it puts down on a stock car... ide like to see what it puts down on a car with intake and exhaust. ide imagine there would be a decent difference between the two?

10hp to the wheels will not happen with headers alone.
Just think about how much that is at the crank.
That requires more fuel and oxygen.

The headers will only free up what was restricted by the stock manifold and down pipe. The reason the big companies cannot free up much power on our cars after long r&d hours is because our stock setup is actually well designed.

I purchased my stainless header for the sound and looks. Don't expect too much, or you will be disappointed.

If this header makes the power you quoted then I am interested, as long as the price does not get too far from $400.

I LOVE that picture !!!
You're right, I'm a NOOB on this forum....
only because I've had the eclipse for less than a year.
However, this isn't my first car that I've worked on in the past seven years.
You would be surprised...your 3k + posts don't mean you have much over someone who has less than 100. Just more time to type. I'm not mad, just be careful who you call a "noob"
(specV's are not 420A's)
I'm on this forum to learn about different parts/brands available for the car and some recurring issues we might encounter. If the headers work out, that's great... I just hope people don't get too excited just to be disappointed.

The reason the big companies cannot free up much power on our cars after long r&d hours is because our stock setup is actually well designed. I purchased my stainless header for the sound and looks. Don't expect too much, or you will be disappointed.
dood... hotshot headers make like 12 WHEEL horse power on specV sentras.....and the specV's exhaust system is well designed... http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/may02/images/specvdynochart.jp g if the guy thinks he can make some good power with his header, then let him try.... if he does, awsome..... dont go shooting him down before he tries *edit* NOOOOOOOOOOOB
I'm not mad, just be careful who you call a "noob" (specV's are not 420A's) I'm on this forum to learn about different parts/brands available for the car and some recurring issues we might encounter. If the headers work out, that's great... I just hope people don't get too excited just to be disappointed.

Good reply...

AFX has been designing a long tube header for the 420A in the Talon/Eclipse. It should offer performance just like the AFX Long Tube Neon header. Retail price around $200 to $225. Go with who ya know...

Sweeet. We have been enlightened. Sounds like a group buy should be in order if it pans out. Did anyone see the howell neon on the speed channles "mini flea" show? I think it died before the competition was over. I do remember it got penalized for being too loud. Still very cool tho. Bump...

the car didn't die, they just had the wrong clutch in it so it couldn't perform to it's full potential after it roasted it (car was built just prior to the show and not a whole lot of testing time on an insane 2.7 stroker setup). that car is alive, well and runs like a banshee

I'd actually be more interested if anyone has mentioned a thing yet about midrange gains. I'm not a dragger, so generally top-end numbers don't appeal much.

the step tube header that I will be building for the 420a, will definately produce a strong mid range pull, the step tube header by design gives you the best of both worlds, it gives you a very broad tq curve, with an awesome top end charge, this header should pull strong from 2500rpm all the way to red line thanx Jason

Not knowing Jason or the guys at Fast Fabrications personally, but I can speak of their work...I have ties with Chrysler and Street and Racing Technology.. being that my place of business builds the exhaust systems for the Competition Coupe Viper. Anyhow, I do know that they have an underestanding and design theory in making power, and it does work. I'm turboed so this has no bearing on me, but I say give them a chance.. you'll probably be quite surprised.

Just for reference, the hotshot header for the SpecV makes so much power because it removes a close coupled cat.

Thanks for the clarification.
The header alone did not free up over 10 wheel hp.
So these long tube headers may have potential to do so, if we also remove our cats.
