I hate to post this up here and ask what fluid to use...but reading those old ones are way to confusing. some say atf 4 is ok. others no. so i went to autozone and they looked it up for me and said atf 4 is not right. that i needed some fluid they didnt even carry. so off to murrays and they looked it up and it said i could use some synpower 5-70 fluid or something. those were 11.99 a quart. does this sound correct?

Discontinued. Dealerships are probably now sold out. Mitsu took the position of recommending the ATF-4 for BOTH automatic and manual trannies. Crock of shit cost saving measure (IMO). I don't like the ATF-4 (and there have been studies that find it to be quite inferior). I use Amsoil MTX synthetic.

Lots of discussions about this. Here, check out this link on Neons. Pay particular attention to Terry Mach 1's answers (third page),

interesting. After some homework, seems like the closest cross reference from the mopar is royal purple's synchromax. They claim it's compatible with all friction surfaces... skeptical

Hmm....here let me help a little (for those that don't want to read through)

From Terry (a New Venture employee). Its not just that he is a New Venture employee, he has proven his mettle with support and points during many different discussions on the subject (and other subjects)

"I was talking to the engineer who designed the T-350 and T-850 and he recommends using Amsoil synthetic synchromesh manual transmission fluid. It's very similair to the original T-350 oil but is better because it is full synthetic. It also has the friction modifier that you have to add to ATF+4 in the T-850. The SRT guys can use this also and they don't have to add anything to it. I think it's $9 a quart from Amsoil.

He said the ATF+4 was only used to cut costs and says it's garbage compared to the original T-350 oil or this Amsoil stuff. I'm sure the royal purple synchromesh MTX fluid will work just as well and I know it has the friction modifier in already also.
"

and

"The head engineer for the T-350 personally worked with Amsoil in designing the Amsoil SSMTX with all of the requirements and then some for the T-350 and T-850. The Amsoil is better than the mopar MTX because it's full synthetic and doesn't sheer out like the Mopar oil. Essentially it stays better for longer and doesn't get gummy.

In all the shift tests done with the T-350 and the all the 3 different oils the Amsoil came out on top followed by the Mopar oil and last was the ATF+4. The Amsoil was leaps and bounds above the other 2 oils in every category especially shift effort, noise, oil temp., wear, over-all shift feel and oil life.

So you guys can take it for what it's worth but I know I'm using the Amsoil because that's what is recommended by the engineer who designed it and based on the results of the tests performed on the oils.
"

This is not an ad for Amsoil, but more an indicator of what Mitsu was thinking when they recommended the ATF-4.

interesting info.....I will stick with ATF+4. Granted he is an employee, most likely a disgruntle one, since the factory has to warrenty the trans when new, I am sure they would not send it out with a fluid that would ruin it.
