#3980, "Final drive problem.. grinding"

I installed the final drive gears today and noticed a few things I couldn't find in other write-ups. The new upper gear's bearings did not fit into the hole and I had to pull a bushing out of it so that it would fit. I then sealed it up and added the fluid and tested it.

Whenever the car would pull, it would make a clicking noise that increased with the throttle in speed. I immediately stopped and took the cover back off. The lower gear was scraping against the inner casing, so I figured that I had left the bushing off. I took that gear off and checked. The bushing was on, but what I discovered was that there was a lot of play in the lower shaft, like it would come in and out.

I then put an additional bushing behind the lower gear to try to keep it from hitting the casing again. Started it, and it did the same thing.

Any ideas as to what I did wrong? I have a 95 GS ATX.

Also, I noticed that the teeth run oppositely on the new gears compared to the originals.

Thanks in advance.

Also, mine did not have the other bolts with the tabs that the write up talked about. Thanks.

if u have play in the lower gear and both axles are in there's a problem. not your FD gears.drop the trans and pull the diff cover off.... im willing to bet you have your pinnion shaft (front pin) loose or completly off. This is probably caused when u installed the new gears....... using a lil hammer action maybe? well wheather u did or not is not the concern.... i would start my search in the diff.

Well, that sucks. So, is something broken that I have to replace, or is it loose? Any idea on what kind of $$$ I'm looking at? Thanks for your help and sorry, I'm new to the car scene and especially the ATX.

Sorry for all of the questions, but am I going to be able to fix this with just a jack and jack-stands? I don't have access to a lift and have to do this outside in my apartment's parking lot. Any advice or directions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again.
