#6035, "my first time at the track...could have been better..."

Took my very lightly modded (dc headers aem v2 cai Flowmaster 40 exhaust) n/a 420a out for the first time...heres a few of the times slips. my clutch is grabbing really high and i think its on its way out, i was thinking of a sbc stage 1?
i'm car #272...first race was against a new sti, the second race actually puzzled me, it says that i lost but i definately beat the car by 2 or 3 car lengths, and im pretty sure i didnt jump the light. third one the guy jumped the light and i still beat that lil civic =]
and the last one was against a 05/06ish g35 coupe, he must have been a terrible driver cuz i dont think it should have been as close as it was. any thoughts or constructive criticism is appreciated

Pretty good times for your first time out with your stocker. It does show you won the second race. Good reaction time on that one as well. Consistent traps, so you won't be getting much higher traps than that with your current set-up. So you would have to get better times with-in your launch and shifting.

I see your best launch is at the end, so that implies that you were finding your launch area better. On the stock tires (16's actually), with open diff I could launch her down in the 2.2's. Now I didn't work that long before I went to stickies and LSD, but I'm thinking you may not get her down much lower than that. BUT that would be a huge improvement from your current launch.

As for shifting, are you no lift shifting (basically holding you gas pedal down all the way, all the time throughout the 1/4)? This will gain you a tenth if you are not doing this. If done properly, it will not hurt the tranny. I have yet to burn a synchro on our trannies (knock on wood), so it is possible. Of course, you could burn one trying to learn this technique, lol.

That leaves us with some questions. Do you have an adjustable suspension? If so go soft as possible in front and hard as possible in back. What are you running for tires/tire pressure? High pressure in the rears and soft in front (for sidewall absorbtion). What/how are you launching? Too much to address there until feedback. Then you can also do the quick lighten up by removing spare tire jack accessories.

Of course, as always, the best way to make your car faster is seat time.

Lookin' good so far.

Umm, not trying to argue ( so OP listen to him over me) But bullet. When i first got my car i did do this and while the extra bit fo speed it provided out of each shift was awesome, i did TRASH a clutch doing it. Broke it really bad. IDK if age had something to do with it but the way i broke it i doubt it did. Just saying. Maybe you can point out what i did wrong.

Nice times though. Remove that spare tire and get back to it. You have better parts than me an i got my 1/8 down to a 10.5 right now. Get some energy supension motor mounts! They're like $75 shipped and the make a world of difference in launches. Super glue them bitches in and find the biggest bolt (diameter wise) you can fit into the tq mounts and you'll be set.

95 RS sold...

That shouldn't break your clutch. I tried this one time down the track and every gear would scrape as it went in. Sounded horrible and didn't make the car any faster. I have started back doing this but I now use MS to control the NLTS so its not a problem anymore.

Lol, yeah, I hear ya. This is a practice, practice, practice thing. I actually learned it many years ago with the car not running. Had to "unlearn" the rote memory of lifting as you shifted. I started out just doing it while the car was sitting, then worked up lower rpm speed shifts etc. I actually start moving the shifter just slightly before the clutch is disengaged.

Any quarter mile runs are going to be hard on the clutch. The older and weaker it is, the less it will take to break.

You can crack the 15's with that trap speed, but it will take one helluva launch and perfect driving after that. As bullet said, try lowering the front tire pressure (low 20's perhaps) and raising the rear tire pressure. Actually, I'd lower the tire pressure until you can launch her in anger and still get it to bite off the line. I ran 15.5's with an 86.3mph trap speed, so it *can* be done. My 60ft was a 2.15 on that run
