#5633, "Got into the 11's"

Friday, August 17, 2007
Orlando Speed World

A few runs before, 12.5@121mph, 12.2@123mph.

The difference in this run was the launching technique.

R/T - .198
60' - 1.903
330' - 5.214
1/8 - 7.846
MPH - 95.33
1000' - 10.089
1/4 - 11.980
MPH - 119.36

I broke my alt belt and my voltage on this run was 8-9 volts. I was having some fuel starvation on 3rd and 4th at high rpm. Hopefully next time will see if I can go into the 11.7 or 11.6. I have the MPH so it is possible.

Thanks.
I was running 30psi. The MS is a success!
No, I'm running stock axles. Just burning a lot of clutch on the launch. I don't mind because it is a SPEC Stage V Iron disk.

Nice meeting you on the car meet. I went the next Wednesday to the track and broke the exhaust manifold gasket after few low 12's runs at 120+. I will replace it, but first I will be fabricating a new tubular manifold with a new turbo location. The car will be down for some time. Hopefully two weeks or so.

How's you car running?

Thanks!
I have few videos of the other previous runs from an in-car camera. The only problem is that I have to convert them from tape to digital.
I will see what I can do.

Congrats man...I'm sure you will be mid 11's once you get 3rd and 4th worked out with a little more fuel. Makes a huge difference...have you dyno tuned your car or...?

Wickedtalon, I am in the same boat you are man. The last time I went I had my SFMU/S16g/7psi setup and only ran a 14.2 @ 90mph. Now with my MS&S/S20g/20psi I am hoping for mid 12's.

Well, here it is. After fixing leaks on the manifold and some other items, also installed cams; I have finally record a video in digital. It is a In-Car video. This was on Febraury 2008. Run was made at 25 psi, 24" slicks at 15psi and launch control at 4,000rpm. 1.8 sec at the 60 foot mark. Ran a 11.8@119. Conservative timing map. ENJOY!!!! I have re-play this video now like 100 times just to watch every detail.

Man I gotta get me one of those! Nice run. Couple of things. Gotta release your e-brake a little earlier. And I always try to keep my hand on the shifter, once I'm into it. Kinda a motor memory thing. Speed shifting? And try to burn the tires a little bit more. They are slicks, right?

Reads like I'm trying to tear you apart, lol. I'm not, I swear. It's just with the video's I get like obsessed with looking for my mistakes. Maybe that's why I haven't done it yet, lol.

Nice run.

Great runs! Nice times. I hope i can pull times like that someday. One question for you bulletdsm....when you talk about speed shifting, do you mean not taking your foot off the gas between gears?

Yup, once the foot goes all the way down after launch, it does not come back up until after the line. You can gain tenths from this.

I've seen people do it, but never in a 2gnt. How hard is it on the gearbox? Sorry so many questions, but with no slicks, I'll want every advantage possible this year to gain tenths on the top end.

You're not bugging me by asking questions, lol.

It's really not that hard on the tranny. Athough I ran into two problems so far with our cars. One was solved by replacing my Spec clutch (Grr), and the other I haven't been able to solve yet.

I'm having problems speed shifting above 8k. I don't know if it's a bent fork or its too much for our trannies to take. I can speed shift below that but that would make my 1 to 2 shift a short shift in the power range.

I've speed shifted on trannies with 200k on them with no adverse effects. So, if done properly, it really won't hurt them.

The hardest part about learning this, is unlearning what you are used to. Your reflex is to lift on a shift. To learn no to lift just sit in the car without it running and shift with your foot on the accelerator, getting used to not lifting the right foot. Then take it out on the road and do it at about 4k (practice on 1 to 2 or 3 to 4, wait on the 2 to 3 shift until you're comfortable). You will have to talk to yourself at first so that you don't lift. Once you get it down it becomes natural at the track.

But here's the funny thing. When I first started using slicks, I did not use them because of the launch. I could launch pretty much the same on drag radials as slicks (at that power level). But I used them for the 1 to 2 speed shift. It kept my spinning down to the minimum (but its still better to speed shift).

And honestly, you can gain tenths on this.

I don't "speed shift" or "power shift". I have always though that is to much of a shock to the tranny. I did it once with the Megasquirt Flat Shift option "on" and I damage my tranny. 4th gear started grinding after the first try. To me, speed shifting is to much of a risk for the advantage. This can be due to the high torque engagement on a turbo vs a N/A application. As for the launch, the Spec Stage V clutch has an iron disk, it has a minimum slip at first when I release the clutch pedal so the shock to the tranny/axles is low. It will slip a little, then it will grab hard. I even started launching the car burning the clutch a lot, now I pretty much releasing the clutch with no fear on breaking the factory axles.
Bullettdsm, your times on your 2gnt N/A are awesome. Keep it up!!

Why is he pulling the e-brake after staging? is that switching the rev limiter? if so, why isn't he flooring it? or is he? it doesn't sound like the motor is hitting the rev limit more than a couple of times at the line. sorry if I sound like a newb, but I really am to drag racing.

I'm sure he's pullin the brake to activate the rev limit. Bullet....I will have to try speed shifting a little and see how the car handles it. Is there any way for our cars to program a full throtle shift....I have a friend with an 11 sec integra that has it programmed through his hondata ecu, when he shidts, he doesn't let off, and it doesn't seem to rev high like most cars do when you spped shift. Is this capable through megasquirt?
