I would recommend doing exactly what Joe A. did and get a thick headgasket (which you mentioned) to lower your compression. Yes, they are available. He also has the Gude package so you might want to speak with him. I know with lowering the compression by using the headgasket he has been able to run over 9psi well up to 12psi.
