#73020, "RE: Yet another AWD conversion thread" In response to In response to 5
Here is an idea or concept i have had for a while just no time to actually put it to use and frankly i am too cheap
Keep your 420a engine dump the head. get an awd turbo eclipse trans transfer case and rear end. you say the awd tranny wont fit out engine ok make a 1 inch billet adapter plate. it can be done i know so. ok next the clutch issue.....a gsx clutch disk will fit into out mod unit so split the mod unit and place the disk inside and bolt together. Here is question number one.....awd trans is designed to use a pilot bearing....the wil be none...will the awd trans bearign support the shaft or will a custom bearing need to be made.
Custom motor mounts. Gsx axles, speed sensor will be an issue. use all factory gsx trans mounts. will need gsx crossmember for the front. will need to relocate ECU, battery, poss custom bracket for P/s. ok the engine will also sit one inch closer to the frame at the crank pully so timing belt jobs may require pulling engine. will need gsx shifter cables, may need to rebend p/s lines or use hydraulic hoses, reroute all harnesses for motor.
will need gsx clutch master slave ect. will need to design custom sheetmetal intake so intake is in the rear of engine.
As for the billet adapter plate not sure how much that would run...A GUY IN BARTLETT IL makes them so he can put the LT1 and northstar in a fiero so he would be a resource for that part. Really would need to set the 420a and 4g63 block next to each other to take measurements so clearance can be calculate for the driverside frame rail.
This would be expensive no doubt but imagine the looks on gsx owners world wide. hehehe the 420a would never get knocked again. If i didnt have an antique car i would attempt this just for bragging rights once it works. The onyl issue that may become a problem is the speed sensor wiring.
