Not normal, it shouldn't happen. The belt could have beenso loose it slipped up, in which case just keep an eye on the tension and make sure it's properly tensioned. If you have removed an reinstalled the crank pulley or installed a UDP, make sure the crank pulley was pushed on all the way.

Also how many miles on the belt? Did it slide off or snap off? An old dry cracking belt can just break.
