#9136, "Transmission rebuild question" Oct-31-16 11:16 AM by SilvrEclips
A quick background, this was a junkyard trans I sent out to have inspected/repaired back in 2012. Maybe has 20k since then.
The other day I was doing some 3rd gear pulls to tune the car and all of a sudden the trans started shifting poorly. After a few more stops the trans wouldn't shift at all. It seemed like it was stuck in first gear. The car would move with the shifter in first but if you tried 2nd it seemed like the trans was bound up and just shut the car off. Also it didn't have neutral, when you would let the clutch out the car pulled forward.
I am by no means a transmission expert but what I found is the balls and springs under the synchro sleeve were falling out when I was getting the shafts out. There appears to be some plastic pieces around those springs on the synchro hub that I had to dig out. My guess is that this plastic was worn and caused the sleeve to not function correctly.
My question is what do I need to fix this, can I replace those inserts or do I have to replace the whole hub.
**Upon further research is appears that the plastic I found is not suppose to be there. Something must have gotten eaten along the way.**
