I just uploaded an article to the wiki about equal length driveshafts that some people might be interested in:

It took me about a year of research and fabrication to actually complete the project. I spent untold hours digging through CV joint catalogs and harassing technical reps for spline dimensions. The final result was effective and reasonably affordable. I have been driving on it for a year after that. So far, no issues. The car used to jump into the opposing lane as the boost came up, but now I can keep it straight with just a finger on the wheel. I welcome your comments. As usual, I made an extra bracket for anyone interested. I also have a spare inboard joint needed for the custom driveshaft.

I have a SS one welded up. That one is $145 shipped, including fasteners. I don't have much time to weld more of them, so I would consider selling lower cost kits in SS or mild steel for the user to weld.

A dirt cheap axle was my holy grail. The problem is that I never found an off the shelf center shaft with correct splines and length to match off the shelf joints. I spent most of that year researching this. I got really close on several occasions, only to find that the angle of the spline was different on otherwise identical parts. It is pretty easy to disassemble and assemble axles (I did a lot of this). If you can find the parts, it is easy to make Frankenstein axles. I believe that Constant Velocity took an AWD Eclipse front driver's axle, cut the end off the inboard joint and welded on the end from a PT Cruiser turbo inboard joint. If you had a lathe to make a good, flat cut on both pieces, I think you could duplicate that cheaply.

Curious.

Did you try a passenger side axle from a V6 avenger? The V6 avengers with a604 have an intermediate shaft, just like what you did on your 420a.

I might be able to get someone from the avenger boards to count/take measurements for you?

WHAT?!? I might have done this the hard way. The questionable thing is the axle seems a little long for a proper "equal length" setup. However, it is worth investigating. There are probably a fair number of V6 Avengers and Sebrings in junkyards (unlike PT Cruiser turbo ATX). There is no reason why I couldn't make another bracket to hold an Avenger intermediate shaft. With a new Avenger axle running $50 instead of $280 for a custom one, that has the promise of a dirt cheap solution. If someone will send me a junkyard Avenger/Sebring intermediate shaft and axle, I'll make them a bracket at materials cost. Any takers?

PsychO has a guy lined up that should be sending me an Avenger V6 intermediate shaft. Then, I need a V6 axle and time to design/build a bracket. However, I do have a spare bracket for use with the PT Cruiser intermediate shaft that you could have immediately ($145 shipped, including hardware). PM me if interested.

I am not having any luck with getting an axle made to work with the WIKI you posted, the shop seems very either reluctant, or just idk, but they are giving me a hard time about it.

Any update on the v6 avenger stuff? If not I can ship out an axle and shaft this week.

I was able to get Corbin a shaft Matt. Still waiting to see what he can come up with. All he would need is an axle. That might help him out.

I'm going with the PT shaft with my 2.4 though as the block doesn't have the bosses for the bracket Corbin is making. So I'll have to get the custom axle made also.

I've measured, designed, and prototyped the Avenger/Sebring bracket for the 2.0l block. I worked out pricing with the machine shop today and will probably get them cutting this week.

I had Constant Velocity of Ocala, FL make the custom PT/2GNT axle. Try Kevin Yutani at (352) 351-9557. I reminded him about it in December, so he should remember the job. Expect something in the three hundreds. If you want high strength parts, The Driveshaft Shop will make you a pair of custom level 2 axles for essentially the same price as standard level 2 axles.

So, it's been almost two years since I posted the above statement. I did indeed make the new bracket in early 2011, but was slow to test fit and even slower to make a new wiki article. The alternate design using the Avenger/Sebring setup is here Equal Length Driveshafts Alt. I have one A/S bracket kit left, if anyone is interested.

My apologies on NO follow up. I have through hell and high water with my set up.

Equal Length drive shafts using the A/S set up work great, a small hick up being a .090 shim is needed in place between bracket and block to clear the axles boot clamp from the oil filter housing.

Upon several dozens of hours on a dyno and roughly 50 miles on the road 0 leaks and 0 issues, however shotty tune work by my first tuner and several wifi tuning attempts my bottom end took a boom, and thus the car sits AGAIN waiting for me to finish my 2.2L build.
