Hey I called my local performance shop to ask them if they can order me up an AFX UDP and the guy to me that they don't sell or install them because they "drastically" increase the likelyhood of crankwalk. Is this true? I haven't heard anyone on this board complain about that, and I don't think that we'd all be doing/wanting UDP's if it did, right?
Thanks ahead of time

AHHHHHHHH!!! Do not use that word here...we are here to avoid that word. I've never heard of such a thing. Might they be confusing you with a 4G6 person?
'99 Eclipse GS yeah, I know...they called me and said "they don't make those is gunmetal 5 lug" grrrrrrr.

hmmm...i'm not exactly a 420A engine guru but maybe we should be open minded about this. could this be possible??? stan??? skrilla???? anybody??? or maybe he was a dumbfuck and was thinking all eclipses sported the 4g63.

NO not possible. The crank walk issue is Isolated only within the 4G63 motors, if anything the guy at the shop might have been trying to say that the balancing issue with the Under drive pulley might cause main bearings to go bad. This has been discused on the board before and I belive this is not the case with our design of the motor. As stated we would have heard somthing by now, the fact of the matter is Howell Automotive sells qulity products and uses them as well, along with a large portion of fellow 2GNTer's on this board. So fear not! But as far as C$#@K walk, never heard of it on the 420A motor. SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!MWC

Ahhh another machanic who thinks we have a harmonic balancer. To what MWC said Ditto. The problem was with the bearings and crank on the 2G64. And since we don't share those parts we're okay. It's an isolated problem I don't know that the term crankwalk existed before the 2G GS-T/GS-X motor came out, I'd never heard the term prior to that. Bearing failure and crankwalk are two different things. Don't worry about the UDP you'll be fine I love mine and there are plenty of people here who have been running them for a while with no sign of problems. And just an FYI a heavy duty clutch (ATC 2600 is infamous) will induce crankwalk faster than a UDP on the Turbo cars.

I was just thinking about how valuable this board is to us. People on here know more than most machanics about our cars and the 420a and as far as turboing our cars foget about it. This is the best place for information. I dont know what I would do with out this board. And as far as the crankwalk thing......That guy must have been smoking crack!!!!

The guy I talked to did mention something about a "harmonic balancer" but he didn't know if our 420a had one or not. I didn't know what the F he was talking about so I went with it. I also told him right off the bat that I needed it for the NT Eclipse, so he knew what I wanted. Anyway thanks for the help I'm defenitely gonna gets me one of thems (AFX UDP's that is).

the upd "could" cause your main bearings to wear out a little prematurly. The reason the stock one is so heavy is because it has a damper in it that takes stress off the crank, but even with out the damper it doesn't have that much stress. If your really woried about it AEM has upd's that go on the altenator and psp instead of the crank, but there alot more expensive, I think around $500. I would go with the afx.
