27, build up Q's

I got a cheap short block and now I was wondering what is the best way to go for rods. I'm on the college budget and waiting on my Star stage I. I do have a starion intercooler. I think I'm going to get either JE pistons or I think HRC has some that are 8.8:1 comp. What's the low down with 1st G BIG ROD set-ups? Are these rods the same length as our's? Do 1st Gen rods fit? Thanks
