16165, Some basic turbo tech chat between murix and I Posted by Mystic511, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Thought this would be interesting for those who don't know too much about turbos:
--- MUR1X: when did they introduce purple M&M'S?? Mystic511: purple?? MUR1X: yeah MUR1X: I am eating some now Mystic511: that's the one that only like me and two other people voted for MUR1X: there are a lot of purple ones in this bag though Mystic511: dark or pastel? MUR1X: dark Mystic511: maybe they were suppose to be blue, but m&m fucked up? MUR1X: they have blue ones though MUR1X: purple yellow purple blue purple brown purple green purple red MUR1X: blah --- ok, so that part had nothing to do with turbos, but i thought it was funny.
things have been edited to make sense, and also to cut out the crap talk. =P -------------------------------------------------
MUR1X: which sounds like aS20G to me ;) MUR1X: and defeats the point since a S20G will actually accomplish what I want MUR1X: but I do not want the lag MUR1X: Bill once spoke to me about a possible BB option - that might be my solution MUR1X: but the argument I had was that the A/R housing is too large so the turbo does not spool till late in the game MUR1X: a S20G starts spooling when a S16G does but the larger wheel makes the process itself take longer MUR1X: going bb would make a S20G very much like a S16G and what I want MUR1X: but that is assuming it is possible - Bill did mention it once to me MUR1X: I guess that would be the cheapest ideal route for me to go MUR1X: I want midrange - lag = peaky MUR1X: same stupid shit as vtec MUR1X: area under the curve means a lot more Mystic511: s20g with BB = good. Mystic511: that's all i got from that. Mystic511: heh MUR1X: yes :D MUR1X: hehe MUR1X: the downfall of the super turbos is their single selling point MUR1X: the 10cm A/R housing MUR1X: the A/R house sizing determines when initial spool-up occurs MUR1X: wheel size determine how long spool up will take MUR1X: that means bb would cut down on total spool up time but not when it begins to spool MUR1X: the advantage of larger housing is less backpressure, no boost creep, and more overall flow MUR1X: a big 16G flows 550 where a S16G flows 575cfm MUR1X: a 20G flows 650 and a S20G flows 680cfm Mystic511: awesome Mystic511: you just cleared up turbo tech for me in 5 mintues MUR1X: hehe oh :) MUR1X: another consideration is that lag is actually good for fwd because a small fast spooling turbo can break the tires MUR1X: but their is a window between too much and not enough lag MUR1X: I am determined to stay in it MUR1X: for a streetable fwd the S16G does quite well actually MUR1X: long gears help traction too Mystic511: yea, i think s16g is a really good turbo.. that's why i decided on hrc instead of star MUR1X: the star turbo is fine but I want to knwo who sized it MUR1X: it is weird on paper to me Mystic511: it's stupid. Mystic511: =P MUR1X: I want to know if those guys get compressor surge Mystic511: the BB option was the only thing that made me interested in star MUR1X: I doubt it MUR1X: the BB is overhyped MUR1X: Greg has it MUR1X: I am asking him when he makes 16psi by MUR1X: he makes 16psi at 4200rpm MUR1X: he dynoed 283@15psi MUR1X: Armond makes 18 at 3800-4000 and dynoed 324fwhp MUR1X: go figure Mystic511: heh

I should mention a few more things.
A lot of this is my mindless rambling. Yes I think turbo to myself all the time. :)
A larger turbo actually helps with reducing backpressure, heat, egt's, and detonation. A large turbo will be rather laggy yet allow more TOTAL maximum power on pump gas because of less detonation. There is a lot more to it than that. In fact, I think the only reason Greg got away with running so much boost with so little trouble might be this reason alone. Who knows. In theory it works. (THIS IS THE OVER-SIMPLIFIED EXPLANATION.)
I am mostly concerned with area under the curve which affects streetability so I am looking for a compromise between quick spooling and large which I have yet to completely find. I have a few turbos in mind but some of it will lead me down the custom route. That is process of mind ramblings.
It all depends on what you want, how you use your car, and your future goals/plans.
Oh, and I really do want to know when they introduced purple M&M's?

i had a conversation the other day with a fellow dsmr about my needs from a turbo, and we were talkin bout a super 20g w/10 degree clip for better top end.
i dunno shit yet about turbos, but i luv to learn :-)
