108823, Making a merge collector
Posted by dceclipsers, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I bought 15 stainless steel weldable els and 4 feet of straight stainless steel pipe. I am trying to build a merge collector using a chop saw to cut the angles. I need to know what angles to cut the straight pipe to make a merge collector. This will be a 4-1 merger collector. This will be the first and hardest step to make the ramhorn manifold. For some reason everyone seems to keep this on the down low. Even a google search gives me no usable info on how to create these.

Are you doing this for the challenge? Otherwise it might be more efficient or cost effective to buy premade ones from Vibrant or other vendors.

As far as the angle goes I am sorry I cannot give you any hard numbers. Best I can suggest is to make small cuts and perform trial and error. There is no universal angle as the spread of the collector will depend on application.

The good quality merge collectors cost a arm and a leg. I guess I will be buying some pvc pipe to figure out the angles that I need to cut.

I actually started on one yesterday, I did a good bit of research before starting to make cuts, from what I gathered it doesn't matter so much on the angles as long as they are all the same. The larger the angle from the axis of the pipe the shorter the collector will be but also will not flow as well. So it really depends on how much room you have to work with to make that compromise. Here are some links I found that were helpful.

Did you ever finish this? Mine turned out pretty good. Cutting the pipe at angles turned out to be a huge PITA
