11770, $1000.. need ideas
Posted by All4thaN0okie, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Ok.. basically the car is stock except for catback and a K&n as far as i can tell so far....

what gauges/tools would you say are needed before you would start modifying?? (definitely boost and a/f....) but will i need an safc or something else like that?

also.. MBC vs Electronic
I'm thinking about the Joe P MBC... but.. would it be better/safer or anything going electronic.. i'm kinda new to turbo and don't want to kill the car..yet..

but basically.. just want some ideas of what you would do in my situation

1998 GSX
-K&N
-Exhaust

#1 Boost gauge (A/F is useless) $50
#2 Hallman MBC $50
#3 K&N Filter and hacked aircan (Free to hack the can)
#4 1g BOV (the plastic 2g will leak at 15 psi) ~$50

From there, SAFC ($300) and pocketlogger ($150 for software) to tune. Hard UICP ($100), Upgraded Clutch ($300), Walbro 190 or 255 Fuel Pump ($100). That should put you in right around $1000.

I'm sure you'll want to get rid of the T-toosmall soon too. 14b's are cheap. I have two sitting at my house for example.

What Hybrid said, except you need the metal upper IC pipe to fit an upgraded BOV.

I would say do any maintenance that the car needs now. If the clutch is slipping, upgrade it, new plugs, Accel 8mm wires, etc. Basically replace anything that needs replacing.

Next would be the boost gauge and a pocketlogger. Though DSMlink would be my first choice for tuning on a 2G.

After that, SAFC (Unless you go with DSMlink), manual boost controller (Hallman like Hybrid said), hard upper IC pipe, and Greddy Type S BOV (cheap, reliable). Then downpipe and test pipe for your exhaust, and possibly 3" exhaust if you have some crap on there now :P.

Id recommend getting a nice socket set and some metric wrenches if you dont already have them. also a can of PB blaster

Good point. PB Blaster is very important.

Also a walbro 255lph fuel pump is cheap insurance.

It's like WD40. It helps removes rusty bolts etc. and also eats through rust and corrosion to get to metal. It's like roided out WD40.

WD40 is like water compaired the PB Blaster...the stuff is crasy...if you take a rusted bolt and hold it verticle and dip some of the threads in it you can see it climb up the bolt in the threads....I love the stuff

So think of it as a $280 turbo. Good deal for an 11-second capable turbo :)

GRNDSM (Leon Reitman) ran back to back 11's on a 14B in his 94 TSi AWD.

It's all about Tuning, supporting mods, and the ability to drive :)
