117208, rod bearing???clack,clack,clack

I am new to the board, but I have been reading quit a bit of what has been posted in the past few weeks. I am a proud owner of a 95 Eagle Talon ESI, which I have had for four and a half years now, and minimal problems. I am just waiting for the big one to break.

I am hearing a steady clacking noise coming from underneath my car at idle. That is the only time I can hear it....exhaust is to loud when I am in motion!! I can hear it from inside the car without the stereo or accesories on. If I open the hood, I don't hear it unless I get underneath the car. From what I have read, it sounds to me like a rod bearing. The only thing is, it doesn't do it all of the time, and there really isn't a specific time it does it either. It will do it sometimes right when I start it up in the morning, and then other times, it won't. Other times, it waits until I have been driving for an hour or so. If it were the rod bearing, wouldn't it do it all of the time??? Please help, I don't want my baby to die!! I've got 128000k on it right now. It's parked until I get the timing belt changed, and I'm just curious if there is a way to inspect the rod bearing without pulling the motor completely out of the car? Possibly dropping the oil pan?? Any help is greatly appreciated!! I know if THAT breaks, BAD BAD things will happen!! I plan on rebuilding soon with a Hahn Stage III Turbosystem, but I don't want to ruin my block before I get the $$, if ya know what I mean!!

Thanks agian,

Nathan Shearn
