7948, Still chasing trans problem...input shaft collar?

Son's 97 RS had a horrible noise that we attributed to bad TOB. Of course day before we could replace it, the clutch went out completely (we had already planned on replacing the clutch while in there). Pulled the trans this morning and found that the collar around the input shaft had broken free from the bearing. That's probably the rattling noise we were hearing. My question is what causes this collar to break? This is the second trans that has had this problem. Should we check something else while it's apart? If we buy another used trans are we likely to have the same problem again? How hard is it to replace the input shaft bearing and collar and where can I get those parts? What else should be replaced while we're at it?

chryslerpartsdirect.com has usually all the nv t350 trans parts you'll need.

you can do it yourself, if you know what you're doing. Not hard, just be careful to do everything right.

this'll help. it's for the a578 (neon trans 3.55), but esstially the exact same trans. http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/neonfsm/2000/EPL_21.pdf
