It's more than likely the bushings and such where the shifter pivots on, not the ones that actually go on the mount. I had the same problem, just figure some way to get the gaps closed where the shifter itself meets the bottom piece. Just take off your center console and you will be able to see what it is by wiggling it around a bit. You'll see what I mean when you do it. Hope that helps some.

Take off your kickpanels and take the shift boot off with a Philips.

Peel it back, and start moving it from left to right.

Chances are, there will be a big void that is visible that keep going back and forth.

Put in some washers.

If that doesn't work, you might have a cheap aftermarket shifter or someone that messed with the linkage.

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about but there is a lot of play in the plate that the whole shifter connects to. I got a really nice kit that fixes it with perfect fit washers and theres no play anymore. I'm not sure if thats the play your thinking of but I thought I would let you know of this kit because it really does make it a lot more fun to drive.

The four corner bolts are where you will see play with the stock rubber ones. Hope this helps some
