if u have play in the lower gear and both axles are in there's a problem. not your FD gears.drop the trans and pull the diff cover off.... im willing to bet you have your pinnion shaft (front pin) loose or completly off. This is probably caused when u installed the new gears....... using a lil hammer action maybe? :) well wheather u did or not is not the concern.... i would start my search in the diff.
